Kerry County Archives – An Introduction to Holdings

Michael G Lynch, County Archivist

The Archives & Local History Section, at the County Library Headquarters, was launched in February 2002. The archival holdings are many and varied.  They include a comprehensive coverage of local government from the Poor Law era onward, as well as a good selection of donated and salvaged material.  The following list is, perforce, only a snapshot of what is available.  Many of the collections have not yet been fully catalogued, but can be fairly easily consulted. It is advisable that an appointment to consult archives is made, particularly for uncatalogued collections.  This will help the archivist to prepare more fully and to offer the best guidance as to available resources.

The County Archives is now in a position to receive and preserve archive collections from around the county.  If members are aware of business or family collections, which may be under threat for one reason or another, Kerry Archives can assure them of an environmentally safe home where they can be properly catalogued and their research value fully realised.

  Main Sources :

  • Poor Law Boards of Guardians Minute Books for all of the Kerry Unions, with varying covering dates.  While Minutes for most Unions are relatively intact, those for Cahirciveen (1905-22) and Glin/Listowel No. 2 (1870-91) are less complete.
